Both Natavda and Hasim are slaves who work at a very high class brothel in Andur called The Violet Pillow. Now Natavda is a slave due to a raid on her village when she was just three years old. Hasim though was born a freeman and is the older brother of Abdul http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1662571/ http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1595170/ is a nobleman now in the palace.
When Hasim was presented with an opportunity to work in the Violet Pillow as one of the "hands on" staff he had three types of employment to choose from.
1. Work as a freeman in Violet Pillow. Receive all of his wages and tips from his work, but he'd have to pay for his room and board. Pay for guild fee to work as a legal prostitute plus he'd have to pay for his own medical fees, including an annual inspection to renew his guild license, and buy his own wardrobe and accessories.
2. Work as an indentured servant. He'd receive a wage and room and board, but no tips and he'd have to pay for everything else. The duration of contract range from two to ten years.
3. Sell himself into slavery. Now chattel slavery does exist in Andur but many slaves of the "professional" type work under some type of contract either voluntary or otherwise for some determined length time. Terms of contract are between two and twenty years. At that the end of their term they can either become a free person, or they may renegotiate a new contract as a slave again. Their master or mistress is responsible for their room and board. Their owner must pay for all their licenses and medical expenses related to their job, and must provide their basic wardrobe for their profession. By law though slaves are allowed to keep any tips earned in the course of performing their "profession" for their master or mistress. Hasim took this route.
He's already finished one contract and is on his second. In the meantime he is raking in the tips and saving them into his own private back account that he is allowed to have. Natavda was originally a chattel slave but her mistress Lady Naballa has had her terms changed to be for ten years of service and then she'll receive her freedom and pension from The Violet Pillow.

Well he is not a chattel slave. He is under contract for a set time period. When he entered into the contract he was able to set certain pre-conditions to it. At the same time Lady Naballa could make her terms and requirements known. If both sides agreed then a contract is drawn and signed in front witnesses. If either side violates the terms of the contract then certain rather severe penalities can come into effect for either side.
While it might seem odd by modern standards it was a system commonly used in Ancient Greece and Rome. Most teachers and doctors would establish their careers first by becoming slaves for certain duration of time in wealthy households. Their master paid for the travel to their home. By their association with their owner they met other people of importance and establish their reputation and connections with the people who later might require their services. When they served their contract they had a ready made list of clients and their reputation as a professional was well known so they had much easier time start their careers as freemen.
Today we think of slavery as only the degrading, plantation, sweat shop, forced sex worker trapped for life type of modern headlines and 19th Century Southern US. In the ancient and medieval Islamic world slavery ran the whole gamut from the "Work them until they die!" galley slaves to individuals who were slaves but wielded more power, and respect, than most freemen of the time.
