But the lighting on the lower cheek is odd and makes it look concave.

This arab had dark skin around the eyes and upper cheak. Not much I could do with such dramatic lighting and skin tones.

this is a beautiful oil painting, I love to paint horses/animals in oil paint^^ I use to rub the paint around with a cloth piece to get the effect I want, I use layers more like you do, when I work with watercolor and acrylics. Yay for traditional medias!

There is definately something to be said about traditional works. The textures and smells and being able to hold something physical are wonderful

The black background works SO perfectly. And the only well defined color is the horses eye, which just springs to life in this beautiful work. You really do wonderful artwork!

I LOVE doing eyes, even in my furry art. If the eyes fail the entire painting fails. These are not the best pictures. I really wish I had a good color scanner for capturing these paintings. I don't even have the negatives any more. :/

Best picture I have seen ALL MONTH. I am attracted to nightmare horses, spirit horses, ghost horses or frightening horses. This takes the cake along with mysterious.

This is beautiful. I just go back to look at it. You probably think I'm silly, but I had to catch my breath when I saw it the first time, and then I had tears running down my cheeks, even though it makes me smile. It really made an impact on me. I don't know why, but I just got really touched. It's like something made out of light and mist but still solid enough that you could reach out and touch it. And it reminds me why, when I happen to get near one, I get really affected by horses.
(Sorry if my comment makes no sense, but I really don't know anything about textures and shadows... I can just say what I feel when looking at something.) This kind of makes me want to try oil painting.
