I wanted to start advertising my horse paintings at a local race track and tack shop in the hopes of getting some more business so I decided I should paint a famous race horse. I had this wonderful picture in one of my horse books and the caption said 'Secretariat'. "I know that name. It's a famous race horse". I thought to myself. So I painted the picture I saw in the book.
Now here I am all proud a shit walking into the tack shop and asking to speak to the owner of the track. Norm, a very friendly horse breeder and owner of the facility came up and was originally impressed with my painting then he asked, "who is it?" I was devistated.
"It's Secretariat!" I replied.
Norm smiled, shook his head and reached over to some photo cards of famous horses and pulled out a picture of Secretariat for me to see. It was NOTHING like what I had painted. More devistation.
Upon further investigation, I discovered the book had a mis-print and the head I painted was a horse called Capital Assett.
Lesson learned: DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE PAINTING SOMEONE FAMOUS!

Well, judging from your avatar, you must have felt like quite the assett yourself.
All kidding aside, this is a beautiful painting! I've tried using oils myself, and it takes a lot of experience to produce a painting as perfect as this one. You should be proud, and I am certainly impressed.

Beautiful, we had an ex-race horse mare that was related to Secretariat. CRAP. But I cannot remember her registered name for the life of me... DoreeBabe is what keeps coming to mind, but Im not sure. It was quite a few years ago, she sadly had to be euthenized at a young age due to severe arthritis from racing. :{ Great horse.. 17+ hands, beautiful chestnut.
I had forgotten about it but now that you mention it, I remember Pai's registerred name was 'Whisperred Promise'. The name 'Pai' came from her being so patient with people.
I am sorry for your loss. I held my friend's mare's head in my lap as they were putting her down. She was 25 years old and could no longer stand due to her heart giving out. I had known her for 12 years. It's a hard thing losing such good friends.

Secretariat and Man O' War. Two racing legends...and two horse I love! x.x At the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, they have the actual remains of Man O' War beneath a giant life size statue of him. First time I saw it I got goosebumps! :o
I'm totally a horse gal though, think I told ya before :P So I get all worked up about this sort of thing. Gods I would love to see a Man O' War oil painting from ya. ^_^

Secratariot was laid to rest right here in Oshawa's Windfields Farms. When I was in school I used to visit the farm every week to see the studs in the stud barn and beautiful foals running around in the paddocks. They since stopped visiting hours and have pretty much closed opperation with exception of a few remaining barns. :/

It is! Visiting the Kentucky Horse Park alone is an amazing experience. They take you out on horseback and show you the different mares, foals, colts, and studs that they have out during that day. When I went I got to see Barbaro before he passed away. I don't know exactly why he was at the farm because I think he lived somewhere else...but they have a really great medical facility for horses out here in Lexington...so that might have been why. He was out in the pasture with boots on, just...sort of listlessly standing there. It was pretty sad...but the tour of the horse farm was still great. Just...if you plan on going, wait until the warmer weather comes D: I went in March, it was COLD!
