This started as an attempt to work out a minimalist "pulsar sail" design for another, larger drawing.
The sail is a very unusual fabric. One that behaves differently in response to the direction of things passing through it. Unlike a conventional solar sail which would try to capture as much momentum from particles in the solar wind as possible, pulsar sails are in a reverse setup. Pulsar wind is considerably stronger, so the design must avoid catching too much momentum and tearing itself apart. Similarly, the few particles ahead of the sail's path become more hazardous because of the faster speeds achieved by the system, so the sail must deflect as much of these as possible. Not that the pulsar wind itself isn't extremely hazardous. The rider sits just ahead of a leaded concrete bucket that trails behind the sail. The key to the sail's fabric is its composition which includes a form of water ice that forms adiabatically under extreme magnetic fields, such as those found at various boundary layers of the Cthonian atmosphere. This "magneto-ice" consists of long, thin, tubular crystals which exhibit an extremely high melting point in the vacuum of space, and are perfect for making metamaterial fabrics and textiles that can hold up to extremely high energy particles in space.
It is the most X-treme sporting activity one can do around B1257+12, next to ballooning.
