In early 2015, I started a mentorship with Todd Lockwood. It really launched my work forward and consolidated my process, but the biggest difference was from taking my reference use to the next level. This was the first piece I produced in that mentorship and it leveled me up in a significant way.
This piece developed out of my Small and Sacred sketches. I like allowing people to bring their own narrative to this piece, since it is well suited for such, though I do have my own personal narrative for it. I see the boy as being a young monk whose temple was attacked in the middle of the night, and who flees with the temple's sacred phoenix in an effort to protect it. But perhaps the worst thing to try and hide at night with, is a small creature that glows...
