On Monday, in Psychology 101 we were discussing pseudoscience, mostly in the form of correlation vs causation. The kind of stuff you find in "Freakonomics." And the example my professor used was...well, Pastafarianism. (Which in itself is a satirical attack on creationism.) What we looked at was Bobby Henderson's intentional of example of the 'correlation' between pirate deaths and global warming. Granted, my professor talked about it in a way that made it sound like people actually believe this, which inspired this lovely lineless art. (Sadly, despite the clear satire of the entire ordeal, people probably do.)
Anyways, here's a stupid warm up sketch inspired by the incredible antics of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Oh yes, very true, we had a couple classes back up here out as well as i was entering some of my Stats and Anthropology classes about how correlation does not always equal causation necessarily and why they have placebos and run trials in dummy runs. Because of things like say observational studies they noticed things like people who used nightlights by numbers were more likely to be nearsighted, until they looked into it and oops, it's just that people who are nearsighted who are more likely to use nightlights. And also the wonderous early days of early surgeries when they were just chopping people up (RIP 19th century people who died for science! Stillalive.mp3 ), where they were testing experimential surgeries on patients who obviously, could not be any more thrilled than to have mad scientists experiment on a random procedure on them to test if it might kill them or not so all the sick people got away and all the healthy people who could take it, naturally could survive and get better without the treatment, it was really quite a mind boggler!
Still though, the highlight was when they pulled out a variety of charts, such as "Oprah Winfrey shows in a season and Autism rates" linking a correlation that was just as strong dipping up and down, alongside a "Justin Bieber concerts and Hurricanes in Rio" where they asked us if Justin Bieber was likely to cause hurricanes, it was really an eye opener!
As for cultures, i have to say the FSM is one of my favorite little pieces of satire to hear about, as you probably know people can be crazy about all kinds of cuckoo stuff haha, i mean, well maybe im not much of a position to judge. Hey, for petes sakes i'm a advant fan of tentacled monster kitties with all the features of the sea (Hey, Don't judge me! they're really fun characters to play and they have so many fun options to play around with each time like a whole one man band and Theme park rollercoaster ride!) , i say it's pretty cool!
My favorite humorous story of how cultural standards though, is how they were talking about legitimate airplane effigy building and worshipping abandoned islands out in the pacific forming what they affectionately nicknamed "cargo cults", yes, entire islands that built ritualistic shrines to airplanes, and a mysterious set of Us soldiers known as "John Frome". We all laughed it all off as some bizarre quirky history, but they pointed out, they had catholic missionaries who just gave them 'useless books and bibles they couldn't eat', that they couldn't read, while the GIS had ak-47s and guns and could fly and modern life saving medicine. So instead of worshipping Jesus and having all their local practices be abandoned, they decided to worship american GI soldiers instead of building catholic churches and shrines, and then at first we all laughed, but then they pointed out. They attracted a tourism industry, in a third world geographically isolated island that used to be a WWII air base that had a boom town that left them high and dry from the 1st world and now had tourists coming back once more to visit their island, bringing modern goods and revenue from tourism for them to fly off overseas and meet all the "John Fromes", so i guess it worked out for them! It was a really funny twist i thought.
-Arrr!! May the Spaghettios be ever in yarr favors, Por favor!
