Notes of Interest: Komari's name comes from the name of a Sith Lady trained by Darth Tyrannus, one Komari Vosa.
History: A freelance demolitions expert, Komari originally comes from the nearby Thundercloud Galaxy. Unlike many freelancers/mercenaries who have a storied, mysterious, or shady past, Komari’s past is not one of particular note. In fact, the single best term to describe it would be average.
Her life only began to ‘get interesting’, so to speak, when she left home at the age of 17 and struck off on her own. She found herself joining a group of revolutionaries calling themselves the Free World Alliance, who for years had been locked in a civil war with a nation known as the Tyrian Empire.
Desperately short on personnel, the Alliance took the young wolfess into their military and trained her to be a fighter pilot in their small yet powerful navy. Komari had a natural aptitude for flying, and rather quickly found herself climbing the ranks, eventually earning herself a position in an elite fighter squadron lead by Captain Vasili Ilyushin.
Being something of a loner, Komari found herself spending a good amount of her time in between combat sorties alone in her personal quarters and occasionally in the hangers where the fighters were stored. During these quiet moments, she passed her time teaching herself in the art of demolitions and bomb manufacturing, at first by simply reading whatever material might be available to her, and then by actually building live explosives.
Just as she had for flying, she seemed to have a knack for demolitions, and soon she found herself not only capable of building and deploying military standard explosives, but she could also hand build custom explosives, tailored to fit any kind of mission requirement from precision demolitions to anti personnel and anti vehicle explosives.
With this dual specialty, Komari soon found herself making customised bombs and other explosives for the Alliance’s special forces units just as frequently as she was flying into the thick of combat against the Tyrian Empire’s air and spacecraft, though the defining moment in her military career with the Alliance would actually combine both talents into one.
The Alliance’s standard front line fighter (and Komari’s primary starfighter) was the Starblade, and although a powerful and agile dogfighter that could match the Imperial Me-109, it was lacking in a critical area, and that was as an interceptor. Imperial tactics for strikes against Alliance bases were to send hordes of long range heavy bombers to carpet bomb military bases and cities alike. These bombers would operate under heavy radar jamming, making the use of guided missiles and torpedoes all but ineffective, and while sustained fire from the four guns of the Starblade could bring one down, they could not do so quick enough to be effective against multiple bombers, especially considering the fact that the defending Starblades were usually outnumbered as much as 6 to 1.
What was needed was a new interceptor, with a high rate of acceleration, heavy armament, and the ability to operate in heavy sensor jamming. While the Alliance’s engineers set about designing the new interceptor, Komari set about working on the armament. After a period of trial and error, she hit on the idea of using unguided rockets, armed with a high explosive warhead that was detonated by a simple proximity fuse.
Aimed purely by the interceptor’s gunsight and having no guidance system, these rockets were immune to the sensor jammers carried by the heavy bombers and their warhead, composed of an unstable yet extremely volatile substance known as Cyrillium enabled pilots to knock down the enemy bombers in droves, a single rocket being all that was needed to blast one out of the sky.
With the solution to their ever increasing problem now in hand, the only thing remaining was to test both the new interceptor and its weapons. The interceptor became known as the Scorpion, due to its tailplane set high on the aft fuselage and the sting of its 104 rockets, carried in a large pod mounted on each wingtip. For defense against fighters, a pair of 30 millimeter cannons were mounted in the nose above the radar and a plasma cannon mounted in each wing.
Being part of an elite fighter squadron as well as the one who had designed the armament, Komari and her wingmates would be among the first pilots to test the Scorpion in combat. On the first combat sortie, a force of 800 Imperial bombers attacked a city aligned to the Free World Alliance and in its defense the Alliance deployed 200 Scorpions.
Flying headlong into the massed formation, Komari set her gunsight on the lead bomber, and pressed the trigger. A dozen rockets erupted from their launchers and streaked towards the bombers, and as soon as they passed within lethal range they detonated, blowing apart the six front most bombers in the squadron.
Following the success of her first strike, Komari pulled up to overfly the rest of the bomber formation and hook turned to line herself up on them again, and fired another salvo of rockets. Just as before, another six bombers fell to before her, and all across the sky the bombers dropped like flies.
The concept proven, the Alliance’s factories began turning out quantities of Scorpions in droves, and squadron after squadron traded in their Starblades and began to learn the art of bomber slaying.
For the next year and a half, Komari flew with the 96th Interceptor Squadron alongside Ilyushin, racking up an enormous amount of kills. Although with 352 kills Ilyushin was the top scoring ace of the Alliance, Komari would become the highest scoring Scorpion pilot with 267 kills to her credit.
Her flying with the Alliance came to an end with the Imperial sneak attack on the Alliance base at Cyax II. Being one of the Alliance’s major bases of operation and the headquarters for half of their military, the ensuing devastation and chaos had caused the Alliance forces to scatter about the Thundercloud and nearby Anvil Galaxy at almost complete random.
Although the Alliance’s forces were in complete disarray, Ilyushin managed to keep the 96th Squadron together, and were able to cover the fleeing Alliance starships unto the very end. Following Ilyushin’s order to scatter, most of the squadron fled to the Anvil Galaxy while Ilyushin himself set course for the Soviet Confederacy in the Scythe Galaxy.
Komari ended up in the Anvil Galaxy, and after being unable to locate the rest of the 96th Squadron, she struck off on her own as a freelancer. After several months of few to little decent paying jobs, she heard from one of her few longtime friends that in the Lylat System, about a week’s trip through hyperspace away, there was quite a bit of work for a freelance mercenary to be found. With nothing to lose and everything to gain, Komari locked the Lylat System’s coordinates into her Scorpion’s navigation computer and set off to find her fortune on a world called Corneria...
