Thank you again
Hm - it actually depends ... and I've created FA folders for that actually some time ago.
If something is in the "Artistic Freedom" folder, I usually just provide the general idea, maybe giving keywords on what I would like to see. Sometimes I give a piece of music or just specify the mood. And other times I actually say nothing at all.
Commissions in the "Normal Commission" folder usually are based off reference pictures / photos for the pose, hand drawn sketches of myself or little montages I did. Sometimes the montages are based off a set of thumbnails from the artists themselves. This picture for example is actually based on a single reference picture.
In addition, in many cases I give an artist access to a google drive folder with several of these references and they pick the one they like the most. However I also try to "match up" the possible ideas to the artist beforehand. Other times I look around for quite some time to find an artist who actually wants to do a particular picture.
These two pictures took me the longest to find the proper artist for: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/28389354/ and https://www.furaffinity.net/view/26634570/ - and in the latter case, the artist actually combined several of my ideas into a single one.

Wow that is so organized. Having folders for all of your ideas is really neat. Putting together a description or even reference pictures is the hardest part of commissioning for me. I love a ton of stuff in your gallery but I'd never think of those ideas myself, let alone put it into words for an artist haha. Plus the stories and such you add sometimes in the descriptions are fantastic too, very well written and add great emotion.
I hadn't even see "The Ritual" piece before. Absolutely kick ass art man. The fur detail and everything is stunning. I can't stop looking at it, something about it just resonates with me too. I love the whole idea of like joining the pack and the ritual aspect of it.
I didn't think I was much into transformation art either but some of yours and the most recent one in the bar have actually changed my mind. The artists did a perfect job of making it look so well done, almost natural I'd say.
Keep up the good work Rakan! I look forward to your next submission.

... and I didn't even mention my two trello boards: One for ideas and one for keeping track of commissions.
The hardest part for me is actually writing the story for the image description AFTER the picture is done. I mean the general idea already existed - usually as some little cues - but writing them down properly is HARD
In most cases that's the reason for some multi-week long delays between the post of the artist and my own submission.
That's why I'm really blushing IRL every time someone writes that they like the story I often think that almost nobody reads them anyway ...
In particular RIGHT now I have a severe case of writer's block for example - there is something I have to EDIT - not even write. But somehow I'm completely unable to do it right now.
Most of my ideas actually are grounded in some personal experience - sometimes more or less allegorical. Other times they are just cool ideas - or just something that happened during a game I played (at the PC or during a LARP con). I'm playing a blacksmith turned soldier as LARP character - that explains https://www.furaffinity.net/view/25891557/ for example...
"The Ritual" actually holds a very special place in my heart. As I wrote, the artist combined several of my ideas for that one - but one of the ideas he used was a deeply personal one. The fact, that I want to keep that story absolutely private is the reason that this amazing picture (and if you want to know - by FAR the most expensive one) has such a lackluster description. Sorry about that!
Werewolf transformation artwork is actually what originally lead me to the furry fandom. In addition, TF can be a great plot device, symbol / metaphor, or just general philosophical topic. I have a friend who can probably talk hours about deconstructing transformation stories for example (and I'm putting some peer pressure on him to hold a panel about that at an upcoming Eurofurence). And it often just looks hot

I can imagine coming up with those descriptions and stories is hard! I'd never have the patience, or literary skill haha. I can definitely see it taking a few weeks sometimes to be able to find the right words to really convey exactly what you want. But totally worth it, at least I think so. It's always nice to read when people add stories to their art.
Personal experience art is always awesome. I have done a lot of things that I could turn into cool art pieces. Like your Cliff picture from Iceland which I really liked. I've traveled and hiked in many places so that would definitely be a good one to really kinda describe something I enjoy doing. I think I'd enjoy LARPing haha, it looks fun! But I'd be too scared to try :P I do love Renaissance faires though and am working on completing a costume for that!
Ah, you tease with saying there's a story to go along with The Ritual piece! But I understand the personal aspect of it. It is your art after all ^_^ I'll just have to use my imagination.
As far as transformation goes, I'd love to be a werewolf, but wouldn't most of us in this fandom :P I've always liked books and such with werewolves too, Patricia Briggs does some good stuff.
Sorry for taking up most of your comment section btw!

Well - it's not like I'm sitting there for weeks, thinking hard about the story ... Imagine it more like a lot of procastinating, interrupted my "FML - I should finally write something", writing something, deleting it again, *repeat* ... Until at some point you think: "Meh - that's good enough."
> I have done a lot of things that I could turn into cool art pieces.
DOOOO it... And it doesn't even have to be something "cool". Take that one for example: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/26375729/ - that's just me sitting in a car ... "Slice of Life" art can be awesome. Although the Iceland Cliff picture is really based off a selfie taken by myself, sitting probably waaaay too close to a steep cliff :) This is a "General Audience" posting, so I won't discuss certain things here :P

That sounds cool Where did you hike btw?
> I think I'd enjoy LARPing haha, it looks fun! But I'd be too scared to try :P
LARPing actually helped me a lot with becoming more outgoing. It's definitely worth giving it a try ... Plus it can be INCREDIBLY funny :P It's also probably the most fun sport imaginable - running around in armor, fighting with foam swords. So you making a costume is a good preparation step...
Sorry about the teasing :P I think I only read one book by Patricia Briggs - I actually consume a LOT of short stories instead ...
It's not like someone else is using the space on this page Plus you got things rolling with good questions so that was a good conversation starter ... I think I mentioned something about that on my profile page
