Eserdi is a town known for being home to a fanatical anti-wing cult. However, the cult is literally just anti-wing, not anti-winged-people, and while they will de-wing citizens and foreigners alike, they are quite dedicated to making sure their victims are otherwise treated as any non-winged person might be, including healing the wounds from being de-winged.

Born following a Melsir raid on Eserdi, Vex was raised just like any other town child after having his wings removed. When he came of age as an incubus, his headwings were likewise cut off with no further malice towards Vex as a person. Raised outside his clan, he lacks their drive towards chaos and violence, but he can't help riling people up, especially taking joy in aiding his people in de-winging outsiders who come to his town. As such, he is a member of the town guard, always hoping to be the first to see and reach winged foreigners coming into Eserdi territory. None of his clan members have ever returned to Eserdi since his birth, so the clan either don't know or don't care about his existence.

Unlike Vex, Tori's conception was a peaceful one. Not being acquainted with Cubi as a race, the people of Eserdi did not recognize her father's clan marking as a sign that he was an incubus, any more than they understood why and how Vex's had appeared. Her parents divorced and her father left town entirely before it became apparent that her mother was pregnant, and not knowing that her father had been of a naturally winged race, Tori's wings were something of a surprise. Like Vex, Tori was de-winged at birth and at her awakening as a Cubi. Less invested in de-winging outsiders than Vex is, she instead works in the town hospital, feeding off patients who feel shamed by what they've done to get themselves admitted, as well as assisting in the healing of de-winged patients.

Vex and Tori are both eventually "collected" by Ambrose, and given a more thorough education on the Cubi nature. However, they both return to Eserdi, only leaving for good when Tori became pregnant. They never married, but raised the child together and lived together for several centuries.
