Jack was the real daughter of Captain Rose, albeit, she didn't spend her life at sea. She was raised on land with her mother, who was a second love to Captain Rose (the first being the sea). Captain Rose would often dock at the little island where Jack was born in order to visit Venira, Jack's mother.
Jack was a rowdy kid growing up, picking fights, winning them, and overall just being like one of the boys. She never cared for femininity, still doesn't, and probably never will.
There was one meeting that was different, when once her father brought a young girl by the name Azura. She was told that Azura was found on the streets, and was now working for him on his ship. Azura was a shy little thing, and Jack had this sudden strong urge to protect this young girl.
Years went by, and the visits from Captain Rose started to dwindle, before completely disappearing. There was rumors of a battle going on around the empire, which was basically on the other side of the map. Months passed, and even then, those rumors faded to nothingness. Rumors are just rumors, right?
There came a time when a familiar ship was docking on the island, the Black Rose, but the captain that stepped off the ship was not Captain Rose, but in the eyes of Jack, a very beautiful woman. It was almost like love at first sight, except, there was a familiarity of this woman. It was Azura.
Jack rushed to the docks, picking up Azura and spinning her around. It had been a few years since they had seen each other, but over time they had become really close friends. They hugged, they talked, but Azura had a grave look on her face. It didn't take long for them to find a spot to sit so Azura could tell her tale, of the Battle of the Black Rose, on Captain Rose's death. Tears were pouring from Azura's eyes as she recounted her tale of just exactly what happened. How she went crazy, on how she gathered the remaining crew, on how she fought and got the Black Rose back.
It was a lot to take in, and Jack just stared out blankly at the sea while listening to everything. Azura was the captain now, her father was dead, but the Black Rose still lived. The crew was small, and there was much work to be done in terms of labor, and more crew was going to be needed for longer journeys or bigger missions.
Seeing Azura cry was more than enough, and Jack had one simple request, take her along. She wanted to join the crew of the Black Rose. She was a good fighter, and she wanted to be at Azura's back, she wanted to be the one to protect her and make sure that what happened to her father doesn't happened again.
And so Jack joined the crew, and was made First Mate right from the state, not only due to her heritage, but for the history the two shared.
The next few years passed with Jack saving Azura's hide more than a few times, with Jack being much more adequate at combat, while strategy was more Azura's forte. Between the two of them, they became a a force to be reckoned with.
Somewhere in there, Jack professed her love for Azura, asking for her as a partner, not just a friend. And maybe that's the reason the two are so well coordinated?
