that's impressive. I've always wanted to see one, but so far the closest I've come is a DM&IR 2-8-8-4, a Mallet I think.

Actually out side of its ungodly size its a fairly conventional steam engine :P They just made everything bigger xD

yep UP had a reputation for running some of the biggest locomotives on the face of the planet. plus the fact that these could hit 80 mph on a good day makes them all the more admirable

Heh, I really like some of the oddities though. I forgot which line did it but thier was a tripple 4-8-8-8-4 mallet built :P

the Erie built that it was called a Triplex. it was a 2-8-8-8-2 but really it was a 2-8-8-0 with a 0-8-2 powered tender

Thats the one I'm thinking of. Its firebox just couldn't provide the steam pressure for that many valves and it pretty much withered on the vine :(

It probably didn’t help that only half the exhaust steam was used to create draught.

Wow, old post xD Yeah the whole thing was just kind of a flop. Some one also built a steam turbine driven engine. It just provided absolutely no benefit over any other power type.

There were a few successful turbine locomotives that I know of the British one ran for more than 400,000 miles of relatively trouble free running and a few in Scandinavia that ran for years.

Yeah it worked fine. But the railroad just couldn't find any justification for more of them.

Man.... I wish Cheyenne would bring that Big Boy back into operation... It'd be awesome to see one of those giants thundering down the line...

yeah but #4014 from California is gonna be reactivated in a few years
So this will make 3 Big Boys within a 100 miles of each other
the other one being #4004's sister #4005 which is at the Forney Museum in Denver
