1989 was the year of undersea movies. The Abyss, Deep Star Six, Leviathan, and then a few others came out in 1990 if I remember. Most were forgettable.
Anyhow, I always had a fascination with deep sea exploration. Probably because the first set of books I remember as a child (yeah, for the pretty pictures) was my parents' collection of 'The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau'. I vividly remember the checkerboard undersea habitats the divers stayed in during a few experiments.
So when it came time to do a cover for Mythagoras, all of that somehow spilled onto the paper. It's shoddy, but it's sixteen years old.
Amusingly, the undersea 'buoy' was derived from a sketch I had made from a photograph of a Soviet oceanography satellite at work (I was working for Lockheed at the time).
I probably could have gotten in trouble at the time if anyone specializing in Soviet 'black object' satellites had gotten a look at this cover and recognized it beneath the different paint job and added doohickeys.
This was done in two layers on some type of texture paper (coquille? I don't know, haven't used the stuff in over a decade). It's far, far, far from my best work, but I still like the movement in it and the overall layout and concept.

The trick is not to do it all at once. When your patience is exhausted, you go do something else. All the major elements of this were separate sketches based on a rough layout scribble; every dolphin, the swimmers, the little 'bots', and the 'research buoy'. So I only really worked on one or two elements at a time then combined them all.
Of course, this has its drawbacks. Past a certain point you must merge it all together or things don't look like they belong in the same environment. I think I came really close to going past that point with this piece.

Haha! Yes, this is why I love watching you so much... All these fascinating background details you put in your description.
Like the looks of this a lot, even if you find it a bit dusty. I'm tempted to say this has a "Popular Mechanics" backissue illustration feel to it, but I guess that probably because this is very "backissue" as it is :) Haha, either way, it's a pretty slick piece. Don't be shy about uploading more! You don't seem to do it often enough...

I was going for older 'Popular Mechanics' or 'Aviation Leak...Er, Aviation Week', yeah!
My biggest issue with it is the granularity of the coquille board. It was a shortcut I regret taking.
I'd love to upload more, but over the years of inactivity I've lost a lot of originals and so I tend to post stuff as I find it in little clumps.
Okay, no. What I'd really love is to get my hand-eye coordination back to the point that I could post _NEW_ art, dammit...
Must keep working at that. Plod, plod, plod.

I bought this issue. It was one of my first "legitimate" furry purchases...see folks, I told you I've been in the fandom a while!..and I still have it, too.
Side notes: I still want to see the conclusion to "Travelling Music" and I still use the "Norwegian fishing songs" and "Akira action figure" quotes in casual conversation, too.
