But I still have to understand, what are grems? And how do they fit in society?

ahh good question!
Grems, as I understand them (they are not my species..!) are a bio engineered species that serve and work alongside humans, and serve many different purposes.
They are designed and distributed by Gremcorps. Some are purchased as pets, others are purchased as help, some are fashioned into celebrities, others help run and maintain crime rings...

Despite being man-made, Grems have minds of their own and free will--sometimes they are allowed to exercise it, but other times, they are not. I'm not sure if the species owner intended for them to be a kind of disadvantaged servant class to humans, but that's kind of how it plays out in my mind...since, after all--each one is monitored by the corporation that created them and never truly ceases to become gremcorps property...
Sometimes, a grem will go against their intended purpose and attempt to make themselves disappear. These grems live a life on the run most of the time, since the Gremcorps will always be interested in repossessing them. Transient is one such Grem!

I guess, if I had to draw a parallel, they'd be kind of akin to the androids of bladerunner. Only--with less uprisings..since Grems are engineered to form deep bonds with their owners and come equipped with a huge desire to please.

Ah, I see! I was a bit confused from the difference between Transient and Yeats, who look a bit like Blade Runner androids, you're right, and the two you drew as commissions, who have roles that are usually "professions".
That explains a lot. Poor creatures.
