This took me damn forever to finish because i only worked on it a little at a time. I actually did the rough sketch (not including the background) when i was sitting with Lightstep in the hotel lobby waiting to leave after Rainfurrest. I hadn't planned on it becoming this much of a 'finished' piece, in other words, i wasn't planning on going all out and making the shading all nice and stuff. But sometimes it happens anyway. Carefully laid plans of mice and men... or... whatever that saying is.
So yeah, here we have an oryx girl lounging in a stylized shady spot on the savannah on a hot day. I bet she'd be gratefully indebted to anyone who would bring a bucket of cool water to give her a spongebath. :> Volunteers?
I'm really liking off-whites lately. After scanning this i used the curves tool to make the paper white again, as i always do... but then i went back a step because i decided i liked it better in a sepia-ish old-paper look. I have to say, i think they look a lot more interesting as prints like this too, instead of just in greyscale. What do you think about this look?
And before anyone asks, yeah, my even-toed ungulate anthros (with the exception of unicorns) have two fingers and two thumbs on each hand. This is not a new feature, but i decided to make the extra thumb more prominent instead of just a weird little nub.
I like how the figure stands out from the background due to her dark shadowing contrasting the pale surroundings.

Yes she's rely amazing. I like the composition because the head is more or less placed in the norms of the golden cut. So the work is rely dynamic, although we see just a resting character. That's a good thing but not so easy to construct this expression. I find your background interesting too, because you use some silhouette they are placed on the more on the front from the character, so we have the impression that the watcher is coming (maybe with the sponge and water to her) from a farer place.
Great work, one of your best works i think!

Yes, that's right, it's often better to look and not to think to mutch. In fact is this kind of feeling that makes a good artist, the feeling for the composition, goldencut,....
This work looks like Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, "Odalisque" (http://www.franzdodel.ch/haiku/haik.....ld/ingres1.jpg) May-be of course the nice backview and the long anatomic back.
Exelent Work!! And''s an Oryx, that's never bad%Pr

I spent way too long on it XD it's not even as big as my usual pieces either. But once i started shading her i realized i had to make her as perfect as i'm able, because otherwise it'd be ...well, you know that thing about sculpting, where a sculptor says that his work is kind of like freeing the person from the block of stone? Well, i'd be failing to let her out if she ended up shabby!
Ok, it's late, excuse my weird rambling XD

[trips, bringing buckets and sponges. Falls into the bucket, finally standing with said bucket on his head, and his fur totally matted down.]
Uh...sorry!? [nervious laugh]
I can't quite place the face. I've seen that pose before on photographs.
I got to fav this. I wish I could put it on my laptop, but sadly that may make me a bit more exposed than I'd care.

Hmmm, i don't know! I did it completely out of my head, but it's a nice pose and expression, both of which i think turned out well. I'm sure there are similar things out there involving humans. The sepia-toned look probably adds to that too, making your brain think of old photographs. :3
Thanks for the great comment, as always!

It looks really nice, EC. I enjoy the detail you put into the tail, as well as the 'mane'. Most people draw a rough little scribble as 'tail-fur' or the like and call it a day, however it seems that you don't just focus on one or two aspects of the picture, but rather as an entire piece in it's own.
*Note* Though I was sad we had to leave, I'm glad I wasn't there to see you draw it..I'd have just hovered about and fumed angerly, jealous at your abilities while possessing little of my own. I do it to Sigiil all the time. ^^

I'm glad i didn't rush the tail. The tail hair was the last thing i did before it was finished, so it would have been easy to!
Having someone hovering over my shoulder can be awkward, but if it's someone i know enough it's okay XD I wish i could share my abilities, i don't like making people feel jealous or inadequate.

Ooh. I'm obviously biased a little, but that's really lovely. The shading's nice and subtle. And, you gave her a very nice rump. ;) Only thing I might comment on are the horns - female oryx horns tend to be long and skinny; those look more like a male's to me. But that's a minor point (one can easily claim artistic license), and doesn't detract in any way from the overall image. Nice job. :) I'll have to get something like this from you sometime.
Will you have prints of this at FC?

Hehe, figures you'd like it :D Now if she were a bull you'd probably try and jump through the screen :P
I've never noticed a difference in the thickness of the horns, though i have read that females' horns are angled a bit more parallel than the males' are. I'll have to take a look and see if i can notice the difference, thanks for the tip!
If i'm at FC i'll have prints *nods* i don't know if i'll be there though, or if i'll have a table of my own.

Another gorgeous oryx girl. =)
I agree about the offwhite with prints and in general honestly. If I remember correctly, it's more enjoyable to look at because it stimulates the cones in our eyes more than just white paper, or maybe I have it backwards, and the white paper reflects too much light and having a slight color stimulates the cones less and it's more relaxing for us to see...
Yeah =\ One of those. I sure do pay good attention in color theory.
Anyway, beautiful lady. Would love to see more.

I never thought of it that way, but ...whichever way it is, it sounds like ne of those little science facts that makes sense :D
I know nothing of colour theory, or any theory for that matter. I be an simpleton, urrr durrr :B
My work is slow in coming, but there will be more eventually! <3 Thanks for the lovely comment as always.

Now that its finished it looks really really fantastic! I love how smooth it all looks and how simplistic the background is, but it makes the image really interesting.
Out of curiosity, how much would a commission be of something with around this sorta detail level? I have an idea in mind, but mostly curious at the moment :D

Thanks a lot! And thanks as well for the kind words on the sketch. I do want to say sorry for not replying sooner, since you had to ask me twice XD i hope you forgive that. Anyhow, a commission in this intricate graphite style would be at least $100, probably more depending on what it was... simply because it takes so long to do. However, i can't take any commissions right now... maybe someday. ;_;
Thanks again for liking my stuff, and saying so!

xD! Thats ok! It's just I wondered if you missed the one on LJ because occasionally it doesn't Email me when I get a comment and I miss them totally haha. Cool, at least I know how much to put aside :D! But pretty much the idea was of my character, but letting you go mental with it :P as in, could change her feet to hooves for the hell of it, that kinda stuff :D Though she is already pretty Llama-ish, sorta haha. Cool about the commission thing though, happy to wait until you have the time etc :D
:P pfft, don't like your stuff, love it! xD

very gracefull =) my brain can't find the rigth words right now x__x so this will probably sound repetitive but:
YAAAAY DORSAL STRIPE =D
the soft shaing is really beautifull, so is the pose and her face =) and only you could manage to get markings to be subtle but noticeable at the same time.

I just stumbled upon your gallery; don't know why I've not found you before. I've been obsessed with cervids for a few years now, so I love seeing them as anthros. I'm really loving the curvature of this creatures hips, lower back, and ribcage. I feel like I should run my hand over his muscles...ramble ramble ramble. I really like this drawing, in other words.
