"The path to learning true love is to allow yourself to be stabbed in the heart, then stand up, bleeding, and allow yourself to be stabbed again...and again...and again." -- me
Why do I have to keep learning this?

That seems to be the case. First "Angel," now this one. I think it's because I have a low and limited vocal register, typical male that I am. I can sing lots of songs written and performed by women if I drop the register one octave, but when I do, it just doesn't sound right to me. Somehow, when you do the same thing, it scores.
I'm guessing it has something to do with the wear and tear on your voice as opposed to my own, especially when it comes to "The Rose." You have more than a little gravel in your voice, and that just happens to be perfect for the lyrics of "The Rose." My voice, on the other hand, even though I'm getting and feeling older, still has the fragility of that of the late Nick Drake -- look him up on YooToob sometime. I may have a big mouth around Fur Affinity, but in real life, I'm a rather soft speaker. Don't be surprised if I start covering a bunch of Leonard Cohen tunes in the future...
