Murphy turned out to be a surprise fan favorite in the comic strip. Her in-universe history is that she was the result of an experiment to breed the biggest, strongest, meanest hyenas together, and she's about the size of a cave hyena. Unfortunately, her intelligence is about that of a young child, so she is difficult to direct, and that makes her dangerous.
When Fred assumed command of the Household Guard, he decided to try to treat Murphy with dignity and respect, instead of treating her like a freak, and Murphy became thoroughly devoted to him, looking up to him like a big brother. And Fred gets the benefit of having a monster at his beck and all.
Murphy's real-life genesis was inspired by a Klingon character my brother and I created when we were kids; the name came from "Murphy's law--DON'T MESS WITH MURPHY!"
