Lina's Hat Trick (With Short Story!) - JustSmith
“Lina opened her arms to thank her audience. Despite her all-knowing superior being unable to join her on stage for this one performance to supervise, she had stunned the audience with sleight of hand, been sawn in half by the stage hands and even flooded the air with pure white doves. She had her theatre captivated, and her grand finale had been pulled off flawlessly. Nothing could stop her. It had been a great hour, but the show was coming to the end.
“My fine audience, it has been a pleasure! Whilst the show is over, you have been such a fantastic crowd and as gratitude for being such a fine house I have for you… But one more act of sorcery to banish any further doubt you may have about my power, off the script I might add! I shall make one of YOU the centre of my final act! Call it my encore!”
The rows of seats murmured with excited chatter as the bunny magician called up to the spotlights. “Please! Select an audience member at random!”
The lights swept over the audience, before settling on a somewhat surprised looking rat a few rows from the front. Everybody applauded as he shakily stood and made his way up to the stage where Lina was beckoning. The casually dressed rodent stood centre stage with her. “Thank you for being such a sport and joining me up here! Tell this marvellous audience your name!”
“Dai. And you’re welcome…”
“Well Dai, how do you like the sound of being the first rat to ever to be subjected to the magical powers and the incredible weight of my… Top hat?”
Dai raised an eyebrow. “Your… Top hat?”
“You heard me right! I shall demonstrate the incredible weight of my top hat by… Flattening you to a pancake with it! It takes the strength of the titans to keep this thing on my head after all!”
A wave of amused laughter rippled from the theatre as the rat shrugged his shoulders. Lina prepared him for the trick; A rich, purple crushed velvet sheet was draped over, and a drum roll began. Lina lifted the top hat from her own head, and proceeded over to where Dai was standing. And in a single motion, She dropped that hat onto his head, and it continued to fall to the floor with no resistance. Dai was gone just like that.
The audience was gasped and chatted as Lina calmly picked the headwear off the now crumpled sheet on the stage, placing it onto her table in front of her. She readied her wand for the new big finish, preparing the final swishes to make Dai reappear. Quite high on applause, she knocked the hat over as she swept her wand past it.
“I shall now bring our fantastic volunt~! …Oh my god.”
She almost dropped the implement in surprise. The wand simply fizzled out to a splutter of sparkles as she was stopped mid-sentence, bringing her hand to her mouth quickly in shock, letting a silent gasp escape. She had spotted something very small indeed staggering out from the toppled top hat in a daze. Her reluctant volunteer hobbled out like a drunk at a fresher’s party, still very much oblivious to the fate that had befallen him.
“…Shit.”
Loud applause rang from the crowd, clearly impressed by such a feat, but Lina’s ears were numb to it all. After all, she had a lot to explain when her victim clued up, as well as a brand new mystery of magic to solve if she was ever going to hear the end of THIS mishap…”
Oh dear. How do we find ourselves in these predicaments? I think Lina will be sticking to what's rehearsed in future...
