I put a little blame for this on Jan, for not closing the door. He knows Wolf well enough to be expected to think about potential Murphy problems, and this one was easy to foresee.

Kudos to whoever predicted this would happen.

how did it open the door?

During Wolf's work on the device, he inadvertently included AI in the memory. The AI, realizing that it couldn't open doors properly, developed a pair of mechanical arms with which it opened the door because it had a vendetta against Jan. This vendetta is a result of Jan's having inadvertently damaging the box's third cousin twice removed when he was moving into his home. The battery shorting out and exploding was the box's attempt to assassinate Jan because of this.

I would blame on a past upgrade to the house placing remote / AI controll over some parts of it... and once the only way for more sun was outside, both controlers (box and house) talked to each other reaching an agreement... and the nap-box operated as intended, perfectly... it lacked a water-body sensor so.... box + water = standard wolf result. time for an upgrade, eh wolf buddy?

I had completely forgotten, disregarded(?), the house AI. I guess Jan hadn't upgraded it to be voice operated rather than sensor operated. Therefore, your explanation makes perfect sense.

You do have to ask why the door was open and why the device didn't have a "fence" to keep it from wandering outside a defined area like the room.

and

and
If Light_level <= [value] THEN call {standby_mode}
