That steam locomotive belongs to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. All steam locomotives on their roster are all coal-fired, that means they burn coal, instead of fuel oil, as their fuel. From the main line steam locomotive's views, they consider coal to be used only by switchers in railyard. Instead of coal for main line steam locomotives, they prefer fuel oil over coal. But there are main line steam locomotives who still prefer coal over fuel oil, a well known example of a main line steam locomotive that still burns coal is the Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 J class northern, #611. The N&W #611 is still roaming rails, preforming excursion duty; although the #611 has been retired a number of times. During the time of several retirements which it was not on the rails. During some of the retirement periods, #611 would undergo some much needed matiecion.
