Because while we can switch our attention and enjoyment between both... regardless a lot of people prefer to focus on the characters as that is one of the most fun parts of a game for them. And for me personally it's among the most important parts i enjoy in a game.

It's just a joke line used to explain they prefer female characters. Hate the line all you want, but it's a true statement for a lot of people. Also just because one can't and won't be able to enjoy the visuals of the characters EVERY single moment... that doesn't stop there being enough other moments where they can and will have time to enjoy the character design. =p
It makes perfect sense. It's just like they said above; if you're going to play as a character for hours on end and you'll be seeing the character's rear the majority of the time... would you rather it be the rear of a overtly rugged male character completely decked out in armor, or the rear of a shapely female character with a nice ass?
It's honestly a matter of individual preference. While I do play female characters for games when given the choice, I also play the male character at some point as well. If only because the story will sometimes change depending on gender. Not so much for MMOs, but for games like Mass Effect, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls.
