Imperial Naval Regulation 133, Section 4(e)
Sailors shall be collected, who have died of their wounds or been granted the Emperor's peace; their remains washed in water and wrapped in sailcloth, and the mark of the Throne placed upon them (resources permitting).
A number of torpedo tubes shall be consecrated by the ship's priests for funerary purposes, and the remains placed within these. The ship's musicians shall sing INR133.4(e)1 ("the Naval hymn") or, should they be unavailable, a recording played over vox gear shall be played instead. The officiating priest shall then recite the twenty-third Meditation, and all present shall respond, "Amen."
The master of gunnery, or highest-ranking non-commissioned officer present, shall then recite, in Low Gothic, the following invocation: "I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Emperor: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and who soever liveth and believeth in me, shall never die. I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: and though this body be destroyed, yet shall I see the God-Emperor: whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not as a stranger. We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. The Emperor gave, and the Emperor hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Emperor. We therefore commit these bodies to the dark, to be turned into corruption, looking for the resurrection of the body, when the void shall give up her dead."
The torpedo tubes shall then be opened; the ship's musicians shall play INR133.4(e)2 ("Sailor's Lament") as the tubes are fired.
The service shall thus conclude, and all crew members present shall return to their appointed duties.

As... not quite seen on 4chan's /tg/ board.
What music should be used for INR133.4(e)2? I personally believe "Ase's Death", from the Peer Gynt suites, to be adequate to the task (listen to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ei3zSSXKigc) but I welcome other suggestions.

Warhammer 40k is a kind of board game where you get to fight little army men against each other with some very in depth rules.
It's a blast to play, but the basic plotline they gave the game is... sick
Imagine a futuristic dark age, where the sole purpose of a person's life is to kill and die at the whim of their king-- a king who is also considered a god.
They have a level of depth and complexity in their storyline that literally matches cult propaganda. I think it's scary as hell.
This appears to be a sample of the funerary rights that are given to soldiers aboard a space ship. This author has made a few mistakes in it however-- the basic wording is spot-on, but he gives them FAR too much decency.

A beautiful and heartfelt moment, designed well and certainly something that I respect.
...But it is also totally erroneous.
The emperor's mantra makes NO reference toward resurrection of life, the appreciation of life, or offering any respite of any kind. The only known proveb related to these principles is "only through the death of our enemies do we find salvation".
Sure, like any religion the SAY they appreciate these things, but in practice it's only wholesale slaughter.
The "Emperor's Mercy" is a term referring to having your commanding officer put a bullet in your face--Specifically your face. Commanding officers are fully within their rights to dole out the emperor's mercy however they may wish to whoever they may wish--so long as they outrank them.
Warhammer is fun as hell to play, but I won't try to hide the fact that I absolutely despise the plot line to it. Most folks don't look into the plot enough to realize how truly horrendous it is... A lot of overreacting lunatics have accused common games and stories of being brainwashing material that causes people to become immoral lunatics. I feel the plot to warhammer is the only thing in history that has ever even remotely come close.
But hell, I'm a prude and I know it. ;p
Actually building you own pieces, the customization and detail that goes into them and their use, the strategy and forethought to set up an army, and then the rush of gameplay itself...
The game totally rocks.
But please don't start to think that the plotline is worth looking into.
In the warhammer 40k universe, they DON'T honor their soldiers-- they worship them. The common man will NEVER be a soldier; they are forced to become cannon fodder for their lords. Literally.
There is no honor, decency, humanity, or even thought outside of killing and dieing in the master's name...
It's the dark ages. And the fact that so many people think this drivel is "cool" terrifies me.
Ugh, sorry about that rant, you didn't deserve it. I'll get off my soapbox now.
But I really do feel strongly about this. This shit scares the hell out of me. And every friend I've ever had who started to idolize this stuff has also come to idolize the concept of war--more specifically of how glorious it must be to be able to kill a man and be showered with praise for it...
I guess that's what really scares me.

Have you ever read the Ciaphas Cain novels? They paint a picture of an Imperium that's considerably less GRIM'N'DARK than, say, Graham McNeill's writing.
Commissar Cain and Inq. Vail, another main character from the series, know the universe is a terribly dangerous place. But they aren't mass-murdering sociopaths, they approach things reasonably... I think throughout the series, Cain (who has the power to summarily execute any soldier) never actually executes anyone, not counting pod-people versions of his own soldiers.
So let's just say this is a funeral tradition from that part of the Navy based in Cain's subsector.
If it means giving a big FUCK YOU to the fluff, I'm fine with that. I do a lot of counter-fluffy stuff because realistic characterizations are more important than strict orthopraxy.

Hmm, a fair enough argument.
No, I don't believe I've read those particular works. I hope they really are different from what I've seen.
And I never argued for orthopraxy in any way. I only argued AGAINST nihilism.
I believe that much of warhammer is in fact NOT realistic characterization, but pontification which glorifies nihilistic obsession. That's my fear, and that is what I have seen.
If you do have an ideal for warhammer that does not follow the madness I have seen and described, then I guess my ranting has nothing to do with you, and I'm sorry for dragging our the soapbox for nothing (In which case, I may be the one pontificating...;P).
I apologize if my remarks seem overly critical, But I feel about as strongly in this matter as you do.
I also meant what I said; I really do enjoy your writing. So regardless of my complaints, or anyone else's, please keep writing whatever and however you choose.

Precisely.
The Era of Christianity on which the Imperial cult is based WAS a horrible regime based upon abject fear, enslavement, and slaughter.
That's why they call them the Dark Ages.
But your argument for redemption and devotion is quite valid in this regard.
So screw it, I think you're right.
I much prefer your interpretation of Imperial dogma.
