FLYING TEACUP FOXES:
Deep within the rolling hills of Iscartha a love-struck wizard was hard at work inside his dimly lit cave. With only a bench for his spell books and a rather uncomfortable rock to sleep on, he toiled away tirelessly to create the perfect gift for his beloved Erica,
“With a touch of Morrathian Bat Venom” he mumbled to himself, “and a pinch of Gorthorian fox tail…” he set aside an empty bottle, his hands shaking with anticipation. He stepped back from the tiny cauldron which had been set up on the rickety wooden table, beginning to speak his incantation. “For the essence of life itself” he spoke confidently, the cauldron bursting to life in a swirl of glowing green liquid “I beseech the guidance of Olde. For the gift of life itself,” the wizard could barely stand against the powerful bursts of energy which flooded from the cauldron, his tattered robes flying in the wind “I beseech the favour of Olde.” The cauldron swelled with energy, bubbling and hissing “To give life to that which I create, I give my essence to the Olde.” The man stumbled forward, as if being drawn in, but he refused to falter “For the love of my life, I give her this gift of Olde” he finally lost balance as the cauldron exploded into a fiery vortex before him. For a moment he could see the face of the one he loved – Erica, Witch of the Night. As he stepped closer, he smiled, speaking the final words “I give myself to the Olde, so she may know my love.”
As the fiery vortex engulfed the room in a swirling, cascading display of bright greens and purples, as the man disappeared into the warm embrace of fire, a single tear ran down his cheeks before evaporating. He knew, in his final moments, that he was successful.
When the room was naught more than a murky cave once more, no man stood. Instead, the quiet mewling of a small fox echoed against the rocky walls. Inside the cauldron sat the smallest of creatures which stood barely 8 inches tall with sprawling, fur covered wings. The creature poked its head from the cauldron, bright green eyes scanning through the darkened as its pointed, furry ears twitched. It let out another quiet mewl before jumping out, wings expanding to soar off with ease into the night sky. It didn’t know why, but the thought that ran through its little head as it left the cave was simply “Find Erica.”
Morrathian Foxi, or “Teacup Foxes” as they are affectionately known as, have a vague history. Some say they evolved from bats, others say they were created by a mad scientist who had one too many drinks. However, the myth behind the teacup foxes that dates back the latest say that they were created by a love-struck wizard who wanted to give the love of his life the only thing no one else could – life itself. Regardless of lore, teacup foxes have populated most of Iscaria and its surrounding regions, commonly being kept as companions or pets to those chosen by the tiny creatures. These little creatures are born to love and will spend their lives finding the right person to bond with, but will detest anyone who tries to force their love. They are invaluable companions, not only providing immense amounts of affection but also providing important skills such as hunting, tracking and getting into mischief. It’s unclear to this day why the creatures are born with what are commonly referred to as “mood gems” embedded in their bodies, but a simple glance can tell someone everything they need to know about how one of these little foxes is feeling based on the colour and intensity of the crystalline gems.
Genealogically, there has been no evolution since the discovery of teacup foxes; they seem to be unable to evolve physically which is a phenomenon that scientists and scholars are baffled by. This, however, provides them with some distinct advantages such as extreme nightvision, the ability to perform short flights or “glides,” and perhaps most remarkably, the ability to change their genetic makeup at will. Something which seems secular to these creatures is their ability to “change size,” growing or shrinking at will in the blink of an eye. This provides them with the benefit of getting into tight spots as well as being able to fend off predators. It is most likely that this uncanny ability stems from some kind of magical nature, but to this day it is uncertain.
Teacup Foxes are very nomadic creatures, often finding themselves resting overnight in the wall-space of their unwitting host’s homes and sneaking inside to bathe in cups and sinks, or stealing a few grapes for dinner. As Teacup Foxes are tiny and/or magical, they need only a few morsels of food to be full which makes them very easy to care for. They tend to be playful and appreciative, cleaning up their messes or baking goods for their, once again, oblivious hosts. This means that there have been very few incidents where charges have been pressed against the little home invaders, and in fact most people consider their visits to be a sign of good luck.
Perhaps the strangest thing about teacup foxes is their inherit desire to find their “bonder.” Teacup foxes have described themselves as feeling “empty” or “broken” throughout their lives, as if there is some kind of cosmological urge to find a specific person. They’ve no idea who the person is, what they look like, but since birth they hear the person’s name in their head. Teacup foxes have also reported that, upon finding their bonder they feel as though they are complete, in a sense. One would think that it seems as though these tiny creatures exist only to find the person they are supposed to bond with. It’s kinda cute.
