MCFS South Dakota (Formerly USS South Dakota BB-57)
Upgraded South Dakota class Battleship
Off the Calian Coast
7AM
The smell of the sea wafted over Captain Herminie Pike as she leaned on the bridge wing railing and looked over the vessel under her command, the Battleship South Dakota, from bow to the rapidly spreading wake astern. Having seen a picture of the old battlewagon during her wartime form it seemed strange to her to see a pair of flimsy sea planes, a crane and a catapults where the helipad and a seahawk helicopter were sitting.
She felt uneasy about being out there without a Destroyer escort but with the threat of undersea attackers being considered to be none existent they could operate with relative immunity on this anti-pirate patrol against what the intelligence advisers deemed to be ‘manageable’ opposition.
Most recent intelligence put a sizable pirate base in an island chain nearby and soon the captain’s thoughts were interrupted by the Seahawk taking to the sky and flying off again, having delivered an observer from the Calian Navy who was to accompany them on their patrol.
Groaning to herself she watched the being from the Calian Navy and his ‘handlers’ enter a hatch and she knew that they were going to be on their way up to the Bridge soon enough. ‘As if my life wasn’t hard enough’ she thought,’ now I have the added pain in the ass of babysitting this guy.’
Twenty minutes passed and Captain Pike reentered the bridge and despite the fact that ‘Observer’ was obviously expecting her attention istantly she went about her usual procceedure and finally after getting multiple reports she finally turned to face the being.
“Commander Dako, I am Captain Pike, welcome aboard the South Dakota” she said in a friendly tone, holding out her handpaw to him.
Commander Dako smiled and shook her handpaw while looking over the Bridge of the Battlewagon,” You have an impressive vessel Captain.”
Over the course of the next few hours the South Dakota steadily steamed up the coast towards its patrol area, her redesigned boilers and funnel leaving a thin trail of smoke in the calm sea air and the slowly dissipating wake being the only signs of her passing. The lookouts were on high alert and the crew tense as they arrived in their patrol area, a stretch of coastline that was infested with mangrove swamps and inlets that were protected by a series of islands that were themselves covered by swampy jungle.
Picking up a pair of binoculars and raising them to her eyes Captain Pike surveyed the dense foliage, knowing that anywhere along this coast there could be a sailor with a telescope looking back at her, possibly with cannons at his disposal but she quickly shook off that thought. The South Dakota was far enough from the islands that cannon fire wouldn’t reach them, all it would do is give them a point at which to let loose the 5 inch guns on. She could see why chasing pirates into these islands could be dangerous and could see the remnants of an old sailing vessel on the rocks and beach of one of the islands, the tattered Calian flag still fluttering in the breeze as the waves broke over the remains of the ribs and planking and a damaged cannon that pointed skyward after the deck collapsed beneath its weight.
Commander Dako lowered his telescope and gestured to the wreck,” that is the Narain, she went aground in a storm while limping home after a fight with a Pirate vessel. Her entire crew went down with her.”
Captain Pike looked at the wreck and mentally made a note that they would keep their distance from the rocks but close enough to use the 5 inch guns on any threat that presented itself. A small dingy with two beings casting a small net over the side came into view and the fishermen looked at the massive metal monster passing off in the distance, pointing and staring at this ‘floating fortress’ moving without the use of sails, smoke trailing behind.
At that same time the Radar operator reported over the intercom that there were a number of contacts closing from the ocean side, seven contacts. Closing at 9 knots.”
“All hands, Battle stations” she shouted, causing her demeanour to change from a smiling being to a serious combat officer. Klaxons sounded across the ship and the compartments and corridors echoed with the sounds of boots and orders as the large crew rushed to man their stations. Donning a helmet and flak vest and making Commander Dako wear the vest and helmets that had been issued for him, Captain Pike raised her binoculars and looked at the horizon before smiling,” let them get within range of the 5 inch guns before firing.”
“Aye Captain”
“Captain, 5 contacts exiting the inlets and closing at 9 knots, they are opening fire” a lookout shouted, causing the Captain to spin around and raise her binoculars. The small gunboats emerged from around the islands and headed for the South Dakota. She saw the forward facing cannons belched flame and smoke on all the gunboats, the cannonballs falling short and creating geysers just short of the South Dakota’s hull.
“Return fire, Port side 5 inch guns” Captain Pike said as she looked at the gunboats.
The two fishermen, Yelton and K’Son, in the small dingy had raised the small sail and were trying to get away from the battle when they saw the gunboats fire. They looked at the ships again in time to see the side of the ‘floating fortress’ start to fire. The first Gunboat disintegrated in a massive fireball that rained twisted iron plate into the sea, soon followed by a second and then a third as they sailed towards an island nearby.
The two remaining Gunboats began to turn towards the islands for cover as the South Dakota responded again, causing them to brew up and their shattered hulls disappear to the bottom with all hands.
Yelton and K’Son looked at each other in disbelief.
“You took out five gunboats in just a few moments!” Commander Dako said with awe in his voice as he stared at the last gunboat as it slipped beneath the waves with its crew,” we have a hard time taking out one!”
“Captain, contacts within range of the 16 inch main guns,” one of the techs speak,” they will be within the range of the 5 inch secondary battery in 30 minutes.”
“Very well, helm ahead flank, bring us starboard to 0-6-9” she replied, her binoculars trained on the smoke on the horizon,” lets close the distance.”
15 minutes later
“Targets in range”
“Open fire”
The five inch guns spat fire and the first gunboat exploded before veering to the left and colliding with another, ripping it open and sending it to the bottom. Two more exploded, followed by a third as the guns spat fire again and again and soon only one remained, a battered hulk that looked on the verge of sinking.
The South Dakota slowly turned and returned to her patrol, soon vanishing from sight.
The few survivors on the wreck were working hard to stay afloat while the massive metal monster that had trashed their fleet quickly headed around the peninsular. Slowly they drifted towards the shoreline while pumping water like crazy.
