An episode Le Chevalier's earlier life.
Do you identify them? Perhaps young Michel to the right. To the left, there's Jonathan Black. Not the feared, famous pirate captain. But a Captain of the Imperial Troops' hourseguards, during the Reformation War 1618-1648. Why had an Englishman choosen the side of the Catholics? Noone knew.
What we know: Black took part at all important battles. He was the soldier burned Magdeburg, by inflaming the first house.
Soliders in that age believed in the possibility of getting "hard" by magic, so no bullet would kill them.
Well, Black GOT hard. For a terrible price.
Michel de Grammont was sent by the French King Henry IV like many other noblemen. As the second son, he didn't get any other options.
It is not clear what happened during the lapse of the Battle of Ltzen (in which the Swedish king Gustav Adolf was killed), but it had to be the day in which both protagonists' life changed forever...
Why did I draw this?
In history lesson, I realized for the first time that the age of the first real pirates, like Henry Morgan, Francois Lollonois, Brazillano and the historical Michel de Grammont was settled in the same space of time like that most terrible war of them all. Most of the pirates served in one of the armies (more robber bands than troops) as a mercenary.

i think there was a really movie made in the mid 60's. It got no box office, but it had Michael Caine as a high born german Mercenary leader of a group of foragers for one side. They had just stomped magdeburg flat. Omar Sharif played a wanderer ever since he was divided from his family he has hid from the war untill both wind up in the "Last Valley" for period weapons l;ike you are depicting above i remember the movie to be rather well done, as the English would say. They did have wheel locks and arbresqueses like the ones you have the cradle fire with. Those i think were matchlock. Also the English had that small problem with Cromwell and the English Civil war and all, Roundheads versus Royalists, (Charles's wife was French Catholic i believe) oh if this is wrong i guess i'm just saying it is the only movie that is from that period with examples and tatical uses of those weapons and mercenary Germantic armies. unless Herzog was also.
That's strange I don't know that movie - and I love Michael Caine.
Anyway, I'm impressed: You show an extreme high knowledgegrade in history. Do you study it?
I'm not sure if I understand what you mean with "matchlock" and "arbresqueses", but I'm sure you mean the English translation of weapons ("Radschloss /Luntenschlossgewehr" and "Arbresken")

i saw movies and wanted to understand why who was doing what for why. To understand history, because school was so limited.
Though it is a period in Japan RAN is King Lear. However an exaple of a matchlock i am taslking about is in a Yoshio Minune Movie called Kegemusha he sports one in the beginning of the movie. That is a unique and interesting story. it is very well done plot
