Also random aside: A game I really like, Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor had an upgrade path for the mage class where you became a lich. I always thought it was really cool since the promotion quest involved you getting your phylactery and then you undergo the transformation. It actually replaces that character's portrait with a skeletal one and changes their natural resistances to match the undead (namely immunity to mind/ body schools of magic). Only tangentially related, but I felt like talking about it lol. Kobold is still adorable as hell though.
