I use OpenCanvas. It's t3h uber awesome!
you might get more out of it, give it a shot -- the pro version lets you save the files as photoshop files, which is useful if you prefer coloring in photoshop.
sketching is -so- nice in OC.
There are free versions (The originals!) out there. Very horribly translated, but they're still free.

the new version has a brush option, you can make your own brushes instead of using the round ones with different densities and angles and stuff.
the air-brush would give more of a chalk thing, but not the way painter does. the original version of painter is a program called "ArtDabbler", which came free with my Aiptek long ago. It was later sold to corel for painter
