Granted the cause of the dragon's fatal injury isn't known though bleeding out in the woods all alone is punishing enough whether it be justified or not. The stranger that befriended the doomed dragon could be the "reprieve", making the current situation less punishing by comforting him til the end. It's all how you look at it though I suppose.
