Sketches of the exterior of Ademar Castle, based on the maquette. This is the first time I've done a detailed closeup of the main gate of the castle. The strangling vines are going to be a recurring design aspect of everything related to the Ademar family, from the architecture all the way down to their costumes.
I did this in brown and green Col-Erase pencil with a blending stump (I freakin' love me a blending stump). I got a sketchbook awhile back made of recycled brown paper, and I thought it would look perfect as a base shade for the concept work. I just need to remember to get a white Col-Erase for highlights next time I'm at the art store.

That looks SWEET, Jon, though the fact that the tree has only 3 branches strikes me as a bit odd. Or is it multiple trees grown together? Now that I look at it, that's what it looks like. Even so, it seems strange that no extraneous branches are growing; only the functional branches that represent wings of the castle. Was it planned that way?
Yup, you're right, there are actually five trees growing intertwined. The reason it looks the way it does is because it was "sculpted" by the workers in the Ademar castle over the years. They basically forced the trees to grow the way they did to take a particular shape. That's also the reason there are no additional branches growing along the outside of the castle, as it's part of the plan to make it look like one solid tree.
Oh, also, there are two more "branches" of platforms on the castle that are on the opposite side of the structure, out of sight of the angle I chose to draw here. Basically each of the trees has been forced to grow into a separate branching section (heh, puns) of the castle.
