I read an article that it was believed that the Haast eagles probably fed on humans at the time they were in existence, more likely children which would have been lighter to carry off. The birds probably weren't very good fliers either...but when you're that big, what's going to mess with you?
Its' been reported that native New Zealanders were tasty.
