I've recently realized that I have spent quite a bit of time sketching and writing about many of the characters in the 14th century dreamscape of Andur that may be very interesting personality but are not the true leaders of Andur themselves. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2852535/ http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2845843/ Therefore I hope to post more images and information for some of the leaders of Andur like the Sultan, his wife and General Dawn Fairmane http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1147768/ http://www.furaffinity.net/view/833513/ and Admiral Chen We.
This is one of the most important people in Andur. His name is Harshek el-Andur and he has the title of Minister of Internal Security and Tranquility. His title is something of a misnomer since much of his ministry's work takes place outside Andur's borders. Harshek is effectively the head of Andur's spy and intelligence network which employs hundreds of operatives throughout Andur and Middle East. Since Andur has always been a relatively small country that has to rely extensively on trade for its survival; it is therefore essential for kingdom to know what is going on in their neighbors homelands and plots might be scheming against them. He is also a math instructor at Andur's first university.
With black fur and gold eyes, slim athletic build and stoic personality Harshek definitely appears to be well suited to the role of spymaster. He is not a "nice" man but he is a "good" man. He possesses an amazingly flexible mind that can hold large amounts of information in it. His ability to take apparently unrelated facts and information and see the connections between them is almost legendary in the city. He has an insatiable appetite for knowledge and learning, and has learned to read numerous languages amongst his list of achievements. At the university he teaches mathematics. Having access to the Modern world he has learned how to read modern English and takes any chance he can to visit bookstores and libraries in our world.
What is more amazing is that he is only in early thirties and he already done so much. He inherited the office from his Father who was suddenly killed when Harshek was only seventeen. While it is true Harshek was being groomed to take his father's place it is lucky that his grandfather who had been the former Minister was still alive. Acting as his mentor the man was able to guide him through one of the most difficult times in his life since his mother had dies when he was a child. Three years after assuming the title his grandfather passed away to leaving him in charge of the Ministry and all its responsibilities.
While he has very little free time Harshek does enjoy chess, Go, and from the modern world he's developed a taste for sudoku, math puzzles, jig saw puzzles, and writing. In fact he is effectively writing the first modern novel as mystery, crime procedural story.

Polymats always make for interesting characters, and Harshek is no exception. The fact that he's also a math teacher and is writing a crime novel in his spare time adds a whole new spin on the spymaster character. I like the distinction you made of him being a "good" man but not a "nice" man. It says quite a lot, but there still are a few questions that could be made, such as whether he is willing to bend the rules to serve the greater good of Andur or even go behind the back of his sultan and keep him in the dark if necessary.
Another great character. Thanks for sharing!

As general rule no, He stays away from that path for like the Road to Hell it can be paved with good intentions. One must understand though that this is the 14th century so he has fairly loose rules of engagement anyways.
As far as going behind the Sultan's back it is funny you mentioned that since I had planned to make another post about that exact topic in the future. I'll give you short answer for the moment. During the time of his grandfather's time as Minister it dawned on the Minister that technically held more legal power over Andur and the Palace than the Sultan did. Being a loyal subject he was rather alarmed by this realization. He also came to the conclusion that he himself would never take advantage of this position, but he could never be certain that future ministers would exercise the same restraint. He went to the Sultan with his findings and between the two of them they decided that the Ministry need to be divided into several different posts with different ministers so no one individual could circumvent the law of Andur.
"One the most dangerous places in the world is right at the end of your muzzle. It is a blind spot where can not clearly see what is going, and the potential for great damage and danger exist. Whether intentionally or by accident. Your mouth begins at the end of muzzle! Be careful what say or wish for!"
(Mizah el-Andur) Harshek's grandfather.

A bit of both. He is one of those people who just doesn't smile for the hell of it. He rarely cracks a true smile but it is not an unheard of thing with him. Also he is deeply committed to both the Sultan and Andur. The one thing the Sultan's wife has committed herself to though is finding him a suitable mate. "I want to hear the pitter patter of little Harshekian feet in the palace at some point dear!"
