All of the Machado siblings were offered a new vehicle from their parents after they obtained their respective driver's licenses. Well, all... except for Mel, who failed her road test and then just couldn't be bothered to do it again. I mean, it's not like she actually needed a driver's license, since until her recent predicament she had enough money to be driven everywhere she wanted. Even so, her older brother Alex, who always had a soft spot for Mel, ended up leaving her his Jeep Compass when he moved out from the Machado home, since his fiancee already owned a car of her own.

Of course, this wasn't incentive enough for Mel to get off her butt and become licensed to drive her very nice new vehicle. Instead, she ended up making a deal with her younger brother Chris: he would make himself available to drive her to whichever parties and outings she happened to feel like going to, and in exchange, she would introduce (and recommend) him to her numerous cute female friends. By the time Mel was kicked away from home, this deal had been up and running for more than a year, and it turned out to be quite advantageous for both parties: Chris made bank by hooking up with double digits of Mel's acquaintances, whereas Mel was saved more than once from the consequences of her excesses by Chris's timely interventions. Still, he doesn't regret the fact that he doesn't only have to serve as his sister's designated driver, but also her bodyguard and chaperone. It does grant him the right to reply to almost everything Mel says with wry, snarky comments, so it all balances out in the end. ;)
