Beware unguarded goods for when things look too good to be true, they often are. That's the lesson many adventurers learn too late where mimics are concerned. These shape shifting ambush predators origins are debated to this day but the one thing that is commonly agreed upon is that their creator likely fell to his own creation.

My only encounter with these was a letdown. I was just about to open a chest, then got hit by something invisible. Popped a scroll against invisibility, but nothing, and I still kept hit by seemingly nothing. Turns out from the combat text, that the chest was a mimic...but it was not animated at all. Lazy monster design turned the encounter into a disappointment. Once I knew about it, It went dead pretty quickly...Fireball is such a useful spell.
Oh that was really poor planning. Yeah last time I used that monster it was in a long abandoned castle and one of the players saw the chest, jumped at the possibility of finding some kind of magic gear and got their hands stuck to the lid while it attacked. The barbarian of the party however was having none of that and just unleashed on the thing. When it found that its ambush had failed it couldn't outrun its intended prey and fell to them fairly quickly. If it had of been a one on one encounter though, that would be one dead party member.
Yeah, trapping the limbs, and preventing the use of the tool-using body part is a crippling disadvantage, and often secures the kill to the mimic. I see the potential of such a creature...However the most effective mimic-thing I ever encountered was the living piano in Mario 64...there it was a great jump-scare. Sadly, Baldur's Gate blew the experience with not animating the mimic chest.
