Lurching undead beings lumber to the whim of their necromancer masters. Whatever their role in life, they are now slaves to the will of another and deadly, especially in large numbers. They are best avoided unless one has the blessings of a god to lay them to rest.
While not the flesh eating monsters of the Romero films but more in the voodoo tradition of the lifeless slave of a bokur they still round out a dungeon nicely.

I hate the type of undead, that has a touch->curse attack. Chill touch, Curse Touch, Disease Touch, Paralysis, Level Drain...all so sneaky and nasty things, not seeing when it comes. One must be super cautious if dealing with the undead! For me, the horror factor is secondary, but I fear what nasty things they can give to my toons. Do Turn Undead and protect our Cleric! Gotta have Uncurse, Greater Heal and Greater Restoration at the ready!
I hear ya on that first part there. Getting a group together can be really challenging with work schedules and people having other commitments. As for the gender role part, half the players in my group that is hosted at my apartment are women. It's a welcome change from the old days where it was that stereotype of one woman walks into the group and it was like someone rang the dinner bell. I only had to deal with one guy like that ever and it was way too creepy to be in the room with him even as another guy.
