What would you feel if someone you scarcely knew told you that the woman you had once loved was now a soulless murderess, and the only way to stop her was to stab her though the heart? Disbelief? Rage? Betrayal? Confusion? Heartbreak? Would you, or could you, summon the resolve to do what had to be done?
Everyone's heard of Count Dracula, but how many people have now read the original book? There's terror and emotional gravity there that people fail to appreciate. Here we see myself enacting a scene from the original book. I am Arthur Holmwood, who once loved Lucy Westenra, a recent victim of Dracula's blood-sucking appetite. The redoubtable Dr. Van Helsing has shown her to be a vampire herself and the only thing now to do is to stake her through the heart, so that she will remain at peace in the sleep of true death.
This is a picture I've meant to do for a while (as usual), since I always felt deeply for Arthur Holmwood, and vividly remember a standout snippet of Cary Elwes re-enacting the scene in the video for "Love Song For A Vampire" by Annie Lennox. (It includes footage from Francis Coppola's movie.) With Hallowe'en on the way, it seemed a perfect time to do this piece.
All due respect to the estate of Bram Stoker.
