"Now you know why you're not supposed to go into the Weird Wood," the grandparent says, trying to be stern. But the child is too afraid, they can't keep up the facade. "What did you see there?" they say, more softly.

"I saw snakes... GIANT snakes... but they were like wolves, too!" the child says, quivering.

The grandparent sighs at the danger the child was in, but nods in acceptance. "Those live there," they say somberly.

"And dogs... with glowing clocks for faces, and lanterns, and saddle bags!" the child says.

The grandparent brightens. "Aha!" they say. "Mail mutts! Those are harmless. They carry the mail. For who, is a story for another time. Harmless... well; you musn't delay an orange one, and never trust the time on a blue one."

"What about a purple one?" the child asks, encouraged that the grandparent has relaxed.

But the grandparent is no longer relaxed. Not now. "A purple one?" they say, scratching their head nervously. "If you see a purple one...well... that means it has a letter for you!"
