Even if a political atmosphere dominates the Capitol's interior, it is still possible to enjoy the natural atmosphere of the grounds. The brick building is the Summerhouse, a shelter for rest built in the 1870s in an effort to improve the grounds after the present wings of the House and Senate were built. Many visitors could not find water or suitable places to rest--this grotto was the architect's response, and has provided aid to travelers for more than a century.
