Island Otter and Male
Fun Talking
Nicholas and Kalea continued among the flowers. By this point, the male was just listening to her talk about each one as he wrote the recordings down. What he had said to the female otter made the situation awkward for him. But the female was acting like that it hadn’t bothered her and that was because it didn’t. Kalea had really liked what the fosky had stated her being a beauty and how he had lacked them back where he had come from. Finally though they got to the end of the flowers. “Those were last ones,” she told him.
Nicholas looked up and then did a little bit of a double take. Her hair had changed to a black color now and the fur had become an even darker shade of brown. “What wrong?” the female asked him, noticing this.
“Nothing just… I think you’re fur and hair color have changed.”
“Oh that? It happen at times. All on the sun. But I have black hair and dark fur.”
“I get what you mean,” the fosky replied. “Sometimes in the sun if it hits my hair just right it can take on a beautiful rusty orange color. See?” He turned around and Kalea saw it. “It could also be my eyes getting use to this place. Who knows?”
Suddenly the two heard a gurgling sound. “What that?” the sea otter asked.
“Just my stomach,” Nicholas replied. “Let’s get some food.”
“Then come.” Kalea beckoned the male over with a finger and sweet smile.
The two walked until they reached a collection of huts that some of the native otters lived at. The fosky smelled something delicious and his mouth watered a bit. It was wafting from a fire just outside one of the huts. A few of elderly sea otters, both male and female were sitting outside these huts, two of which were tending the fire which had food cooking on it. These weren’t considered the actual elders as those sea otters who were the wisest lived in a different set of huts. These were just some of the old folks here. They looked up as if on cue to the two coming in. They all called out to Kalea in the native tongue and she replied in the same tongue, even adding in some chirps and whistles. While Nicholas couldn’t understand any of this, the second parts reminded him of another language that he had heard and seen before in movies. “What they say?” he asked.
“Hello,” Kalea replied. “Come, sit with me.”
The two sat down on some legs near the fire and the elders smiled at the fosky as they recognized him from the welcoming feast from the night before. One of the elderly females leaned over and made some whispering comments to Kalea who blushed hard but smile. This wasn’t lost on Nicholas. “That had to be more than just hello,” he told her with a smirk.
“Oh it nothing,” she replied quickly.
“Then… what was that chirping and whistling you did a few moments ago?”
“That is one tongue I prefer to speak. My English is not best. I like our native tongue Tahitian or that which be ancient lutari creatures tongue. They talk that way.”
“Well… it seems you can speak my tongue if need be,” Nicholas stated. “You’ll get better. And maybe you can teach me some words in your language. Not the second one since I can’t whistle to save my life. But the first I wouldn’t mind.”
“Save… your life?” Kalea asked, unfamiliar with the term.
“Let’s say I was to be killed and the only way to not be was to whistle. Since I can’t, I’d be dead.” The sea otter nodded, getting it. “So then… what food do we have?”
“Like what was for last night.”
“Then I’ll enjoy it.”
It wasn’t much longer until the elderly sea otters served up the food. The females were delighted that Nicholas liked the food. He smiled as it was like being with his grandmother. The elder sea otters talked with Kalea quite a bit. “You seemed to be well liked by them,” the male then said.
Before Kalea could say the reason, some little sea otter children, both males and females came up to the huts. They ran up to the elderly ones and gave them hugs. Nicholas couldn’t help but smile as it was a cute site and it was the same for her. The little ones then saw Kalea and began to call her a word that the guy didn’t know but he was able to tell when they said her name. The said female rose up so they could hug her. Then the children all sat down in front of her and the fosky. The male chuckled. “What was that about?” he asked. “They called you something along with your name.” The male took a bite of food.
“That word is mother.” That comment was so surprising, Nicholas spat his food out in a comical way.
“M-mother?!” the guy asked between his coughs.
“Oh no!” the sea otter replied with a giggle, knowing what the fosky was thinking. “I not they’re mother. But I’m like one.”
“Oh… I was about to say you don’t seem like one.”
“No.” Kalea looked up to the sky with a dreamy smile. “It’s just… I love them. They are gifts from the sea goddess. I love play with them and be like mother to them. I help pups grow strong and wise like elders. I help bring them into world and take care of them.”
“I know what you mean,” the fosky commented. “They are precious little ones. They are the future of this island. For now you are that future. And it seems you’re a mid-wife for the mothers here.”
“Mid… wife…?”
“It’s something from the long, long past. Mothers who needed help had others be there to raise the child. It’s not as common anymore. I say you do a good job then if all these like you.”
“Yes.” The female turned to look at the male. “Chieftain Ahomana say I be very good elder someday. But not yet. Especially since… I think I be a good mother. I want some of my own someday…”
“You will be,” he said with a smile. “I know it.” The sea otter and him shared a loving smile to each other.
Meanwhile the sea otter children and elders were watching them. While most couldn’t understand the words they were saying, they could already see the chemistry, romance, and bonding building, especially the young ones. Children often saw these things faster than the adults due to being smaller. They had their food and were watching this like a movie. One of the little females then said something that made Kalea and Nicholas snap out of their moment. The older sea otter asked the pup to say it again and the young one did, causing her to giggle. “What’s funny?” Nicholas asked.
“She just said you’re handsome.” The male let out a chuckle of his own as kids could be straight to the point in amusing ways.
“Well thank you young one,” he told the pup. “You’re quiet a pretty lady yourself.” Kalea did her best to translate. The kids then began to talk and ask questions to Nicholas with the sea otter next to him helping him and them understand the other.
Lunch was soon finished. “I think we get them home,” she told the fosky.
“Yeah, sounds good,” he replied. The little sea otter that had made that comment about him held her small paws up to the guy. With a smile he swept her onto his shoulders and the little female cheered. Kalea couldn’t help but smile softly at this. It was like what a father did with his daughter. It was very cute.
“You good with kids to,” she said to him as two grabbed her paws.
“Yeah, I like them,” he replied. “Maybe like you’ll I’ll have some of my own…” The two then began to walk with the pups following behind them. They got them all back to their homes and spent the rest of the afternoon talking again. It seemed this was what had been needed to get past that awkward comment of the male’s. It had been a great day but then in a bit another would come that would reveal more to Kalea and Nicholas about the other.
