My buddy
chazore is going to be running a one-shot Shadowrun game soon, (in a modified version of the magical cyberpunk roleplaying system that allows for furry animal people).
Naturally, when I tried to think of a character to play in a magical fantastical high-tech cyberpunk morally-grey world, I immediately thought... Amish.
So this is Isaiah Yoder. His great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, Jeremiah Yoder, dug out the foundations and tilled the first fields of the town that would become Prosperity Valley, Ohio. Near the end of his life, with this great work completed and a healthy village standing as a testament to his work, he had his trusty iron shovel beaten into a cross, which was installed as the steeple of the church, the highest point in the village. For centuries, the shovel cross was visible as a symbol of the simple faith of these people. When The Great Nonsense came and the outside world was consumed with magic and demihumans, some say this totem of their religion is what kept all that flimflammery at bay, isolating Prosperity Valley as a perfectly preserved time capsule of simple men and women living simply.
Some English came to town one day, and - no doubt, as an honest mistake - borrowed the shovel cross. In the absence of this totem, magic has begun to encroach on this last bastion of normalcy. Isaiah was sent out to The City to help these men correct their error and to retrieve the shovel cross by any means necessary. Isaiah, of course, puts no stock in conjuring tricks or silly technology, but his faith and a lifetime devoted to hard work grant him... shall we say... a certain surprising resilience.
Anyway, this is a very silly character to try to play in a cyberpunk game, but so far, Chaz hasn't said no.
