Sirenidae are Artificial intelligence. Augmented creatures who have been altered to be more intelligent. The chips in their head are the source of their ability to achieve a higher brain function than the animals could on their own. However sometimes something goes wrong and a personality chip has to be reset. This is usually done by applying a very acute electrical current to the base of the skull in order to hopefully zap the chip into resetting. In some cases this can drastically alter the Sirenidae's existing personality which in some cases in an intentional result of such a procedure.
