It helps to never, ever use COMPLETE black or COMPLETE white in a picture. That's the quickest way to make it look flat. Instead, go with very dark, or very light gray, depending. Save black for just linework (sometimes not even then!) and save white for very occasional highlights. If you use a dark grey, people will still get that that = black. :3
