Whoops! Brendan learns the hard way with a fraying rope in front of him that you should never rush an equipment check prior to abseiling.
Granted, this might not exactly be how that dilemma actually played out - Brendan would most assuredly insist that it took place on the rappel tower during basic training - but that hasn't stopped some of his peers from stretching the truth as a "fish story" in-joke over the years.
