My main imagine for my contribution to the anthology Encounters of the Imaginary Vol. 3! Here the intimidating gargoyles on the highest tower look over the abbey grounds after a morning rain.

My chosen creature to illustrate and write about was the Gargoyle, and I'll soon submit the rest of the works that accompany this one as well as the story.
For now, here's a bit of flavor text from the passage:
“ Aye, look over us they do, these gargoyles. They ward off evil spirits,” Brother Áron gestured to young Tom as he led him across the abbey lawn. “But more than that here at this abbey. Some believe they awaken in the night and move about the monastery. Many a brother has told tales, and oh! Tall ones even! About noises and shadows in the night; finding gargoyles belonging to one part of the abbey, in entirely the wrong place the next day!” he chuckled jovially.
The tale captivated Tom; it was a welcome reprieve from the studies and chores that largely took up the novice’s days.
“Well are the stories true? Do ya believe them Brother Áron, do they really come alive at night?”
“I should rightly think so lad! Some may reckon its all antics or wild imaginings, but not me. I’ve oft times seen the stone beasts blink in the light of the moon, when the night is still. But ya won’t catch em’ when they think you’re looking,” he winked.
Above them abounded gargoyles and grotesques of all shapes and sizes adorning the priory walls. Some looked like animals, lions, eagles, yet others were all mixed up with different beast and people parts. All fearsome, fangs bared, with large claws grasping railings and buttresses; water spouts imparting their practical use, still dripping from the morning’s cloudburst.
“I’m going to catch one in the act, I will,” Tom vowed, gaze ascended upon the frightful beasts as he walked. "

Magnificent art for a wonderful concept. I'm amazed, quite honestly, that gargoyles don't crop up more often in the fandom. Your short text extract left me hungry for more of this tale.
I love the fearless sparrows sheltering beneath the stonework monsters brought suddenly to life. What a lovely touch.
