I beg your pardon. I believe you made a mistake by assuming he claims to have made an actual representation of the character. This may very well be the way he percieves the character to be, just like artists did in the past and still do today. Otherwise any non-realistic piece of art would be "wrong". Hence I come to the conclusion that your reasoning is flawed due to starting at wrong assumptions.
