Fred Patten and friends. From Left to Right, in the rear, Bernard Doove, Carol Alves, Roy Pounds and Jim Alves. Fred Patten in the foreground. Taken shortly before Bernard left on his return flight to Australia.
Happier times.
It was something of a fitting farewell to one of "Furry" fandom's greatest supporters. My brother, Noah Miller and I were watching Miazaki's "The Wind Rises" When Schirm broke the news of Fred's passing.

He reviewed two of my books with pointed, fair criticism, we exchanged friendly e-mails. He was a gentle, gracious person who contributed much of value. We are the poorer for his loss. He was a late exemplar of the FULL concept of 'Fan,' someone who improved the entire genre he supported.
I heard the news a couple days ago, from this obit that focuses on his anime work but mentions his furry-fandom prominence a couple times too: https://blog.alltheanime.com/fred-p.....ten-1940-2018/
I was fortunate to be a member of the FNC APAzine in the 1990s with him for a while, and he was very kind and constructive with his critiques of my work.
This past summer I came across this amazing cache of Fred's zine contributions stretching back to the 1960s, digitized by Kay Shapero: http://www.kayshapero.net/fredpatte.....apalzines.html Finding that site led me to drop him a postcard letting him know how much I appreciated all his work over the years. I hope he got to read it. I'm sorry he's gone.
