RIP Fred Patten
The fandom lost a great one and one of the originals, Fred Patten.
Fred was among the first I met in the early 80s. A walking encyclopedia of anything SciFi, Anime or furry related. And literally had the largest collection of things related to those communities with over 200,000 items related.
Fred was also a regular at most SciFi cons and Especially the furry cons until his stroke in 2005. Always cheerful and talkative about anything fandom related, Fred knew EVERYBODY and everybody knew Fred. All the SciFi authors knew him since Fred was involved heavily in the early days of SciFi fandom, Fred was there at that San Diego Comic Con in 1985 when there was 15 Furries gathered in one spot! Shock of Shocks!
And when it came to Manga, Fred was a bottomless font of knowledge, could rattle off everything about Anime and Manga. Even the Japanese Manga and Anime fans knew Fred and some of their biggest names in Anime would regularly chat with Fred.
I roomed with Fred numerous times at various SciFi and Furry cons, Traveled with Fred to the Comics Tattoo in Angouleme in 1992 and Worldcon 95 in Glasgow Scotland and 1999 Melbourne Worldcon. I literally did all the worldcons with Fred from 1988 to 2000 (Except the Hague in 1990). Plus numerous Westercons. I was also the one who designed Fred as a bald eagle, which he adopted as his personal icon.
Fred was a good friend, always willing to proofread somebodies book or assist in getting somebody published. Folks like Fred are rare, and the fandom lost a major player.
God Speed you Fred, and you are in your element with all the greatest authors.

considering the film biography he had in the translating and NA releases for Anime:
according to his profile these included Nadia and the Secret of the Blue Water (TV series), Vampire Hunter D, Slient Mobieus, Dirty Pair, Crying Freemen, Fist of the Northstar, Lupin III

I never knew him, sorry to have missed him. I did not go to ComicCon until 2007 when I moved to San Diego. In '85 I was stuck in Danville California with my artwork of furries hidden from the world; My aspirations for a role-playing game in its infancy. I guess it is too bad I never knew him or that Comiccon existed. Now it is too late ...Sorry for your loss.
Never knew this guy. But I do have a couple of his anthologies up on the shelf. I'm not sure if "The Furry Future" was one of the best (and there's a story in there I would contend should've remained in the slush pile), but I can't say anything about the man himself. Besides, if you don't like a story, the best thing you can do is write a better one. And if I want a better anthology, I'll put it together myself!
Which will probably take about twenty more years since I'm a relative nobody. =P Social relations are kinda important for that sort of thing, no?
