Portrait comm for
Killyouridols!
I'm unsure if I should take more portraits in the near future or not? Everyone of them is a great practice and experiment, but they also always show me what I can't do yet and leave me often unsatisfied in the end. Because painting is hard.

If you feel like you can't give the best work you can for your customer, I'd suggest taking suggestions for portraits rather than commissions (and I don't mean requests, but rather someone suggests a generic thing to paint).
Of course, if the customer is satisfied, I think you have nothing to worry about, and should keep it up! Personally, I think they're fantastic!

Hmm, you give me something so think about!
It's not so much that anyone has said something so far ... but I still see how no one really clicks and favs these, and I don't know how much of this is due to them just being faces or them just having a lower quality/appeal in general? (Or maybe something else entirely?)
(If I compare myself to other artist, those who I think are very good at portraits in particular, they also have way less interest in them than in their scenery work, but more in a ratio of 1:5 and not like 1:20 or something.)
And, like I said, commissioners so far haven't directly complained, killyouridols here for example was very nice and said he liked it, and I don't accuse anyone of lying or anything, but I can see people being a bit disappointed but maybe not enough to say it openly? Like you, as the commissioner in this example, can see the artist has put effort into this, but it doesn't look so good nevertheless and you don't feel like bothering them anymore, you know what I mean? That's in the back of my head.
Hm hm, thanks for the input anyway, I think I'll do something similar if I find the time.

This is FurAffinity, most of this site is horny furries looking for a quick fap so that's probably why these portraits don't get much views.
On the flipside, those people who do appreciate finers arts like this usually don't have much to say or look at when it comes to just a mugshot, scenery and the like is a lot easier to draw people in and have something to talk about.
I can understand thinking that the commissioner might not want to complain or is just being nice, but trust me I believe a lot of your fans and buyers legit are very, very happy with what they get! I've done a lot of commission work myself, so I know this feeling very well, but as long as the customer is happy, you should be happy too!
Besides, we all get better in the future.
Apologies if this came out as a bunch of nonsense, I am no good with words.
Good luck though!

Just keep doing it! At some point there will be a piece that satisfies you. vnv
But I understand if you rather want to other kind of comms. So you eliminate the concern that you could disappoint someone else.
Btw klicks, views and favs aren't a good way to measure the quality of your art, I think.
