This story is good! I only noticed a few grammatical errors: And I knew I couldn't let that happen, even if it meant I would die, so I just kept saying no.(")
There were a few more, but none of them hurt the readability much.
The fire was still burning, but only just, it was mostly coals. The room was chill, there was as yet nothing between it and the autumn cold outside.

Just be careful of commas. If they give you trouble often, make sure you proof specifically for them.

Thanks! I should mention that the versions posted here are definitely still slightly rough, they've had only a pre-edit by me, no actual third party editing has been done. :) I'm not ni-picky enough to care, since they're just here for folk's enjoyment, not as any sort of serious publication effort.
