Many of the people who had gone to the Exotic Zoo Carnival were now mere animals, craving sex and simpler pleasures. Those with enough sense left while they still could, but nobody was the wiser. The wards wavered and faltered but the patrons were otherwise unaware of people disappearing, some even confusing former family members for actual pets. The new pets, in turn, recognized them as their owners and adapted accordingly.
The festivities went on far into the night, with rides, new animals and games to play. It was here that drew in the sleepless crowds; the nocturnal crowds drawn to the flashing neon lights like moths to the flame. All walked ignorant of the trap, but it was to the Witch's design. This night would be most memorable.
Her wards seemed to grow stronger with night, so much so that most didn't realize the games were being run by the Witch's actual Companions, walking about in their true forms. Robert the Fox donned his favorite top hat and cane as he watched the next group of humans test their luck with the infamous cup in the hole game.
Dan, Trisha, Cole and Cassie were all quite thrilled to take part, especially since the game was apparently free. The prizes were of Toy Story, their favorite movie, and they were all intent on winning those prizes. There were many failed attempts, but Robert egged them all on. Finally, however, one lucky toss from Cole and a siren wailed in triumph.
“Congratulations, my dear little mice!” Robert applauded. “You just won the grand prize for beating my game!”
“Oh, yay!” Trisha squealed, not noticing the rodent squeak in her cry, “What do we win?”
“Only the best prize of them all. You get to be the kangaroo mice you always wanted to be...whether you thought you wanted it or not. Doesn't that sound great?”
The prize would've sounded absurd to any normal patron, though it was unlikely they would've never questioned their host being a fox. The four of them simply nodded with excitement, believing that really was all they'd ever wanted from this carnival. Their humanity had always been such a burden—it was high time for them all to just let go and be kangaroo mice.
“Oh yesh! I never liked be a girl, anyway!” Cassie sighed, her incisors growing clear over her bottom lip. It would've seemed an offensive caricature to the sensitive, but it made sense in context. Her human teeth would've been too weak for the gnawing and chewing habits of the animal she was becoming. She needed them to be able to chew through plant fiber and insect chitin.
As Cole's ears began to pull out and expand into the sharp and long ears of kangaroo mice, his larger teeth and darkening eyes gave him the appearance of a donkey. The whip-like, tufted tail growing out from behind certainly didn't help anything. Donkeys were typically large than any human. He would've been bursting out of his clothes, not gradually shrinking out of them like the others were.
Their transformations accelerated by the minute as their want to become mere rodents grew. The fur now spread like wildfire on their pinkening skin. All of them were flexing out their much longer footpaws—perfect for running and jumping very fast. It was very important for them all to be able to escape predators. As Trisha cleaned her face, she looked up with her much larger eyes at the leering fox.
“You're not going to eat us, are you, Mr. Foxy?” Trisha squeaked.
“Only if my Mistress allowed it,” Robert winked. “Today, you're all free to wander. This is a place to celebrate exotic pets. You should go and find your owners—take advantage of the privilege be on such sacred ground. You won't likely get another chance.”
They were the size of small dogs now, sniffing at their clothes and squeaking excitedly before Robert repeated himself once more. Dan's ears twitched and he hopped over to the two females and squeaked a very high-pitched voice. “Come on, girls! Let's go! There's gotta be some yummy carnival food around here somewhere!”
Once the four kangaroo mice disappeared, the next group of people appeared at the front, and then the next group and the next after. This went on as late as six in the morning. Then, at long last, the lights shut down and the carnival disappeared without a trace. Those who were pets and those who were human remembered nothing of the Wandering Witch's carnival, thinking the experience as but a dream.
