The setting is that the crystal at the center pulls in the user's 'mana' and gathers as much as it can while the trigger is pulled, but it can only draw in so much and explode out like the first image if pulled for too long or fire as a projectile like on the bottom if released quickly. Blah blah blah, kinda things like that.
