So last Saturday night I was poking around in my Steam library, and noticed I had Aseprite in my software section, and since I hadn't really delved into it I thought I'd play around in it. I had previously spent most of the day sorta farting around with Phaser (my day job is mostly JS) and not going anywhere serious with it, so I was already a bit in the mood for something videogame-y…
I tried for the same style as the classic GameBoy 16x16 sprites, like Pokémon or the various Zelda GB/GBC games. Obviously I had to go for a much richer colour palette to capture enough detail at that scale, but it was fun nonetheless to see what I could do with so few pixels. I tried to make sure the movements were expressive and exaggerated to provide enough detail for the small size as well.
I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to pick up the Aseprite interface without much in the way of guides or tutorials. I just sort of messed around a bit until I got the hang of it (and googled a few key combos). It's even got this nostalgic fully-pixelated UI aesthetic, which I find adorable.
This was just a fun little test, so I don't actually have a game to go with this. But hey, maybe later I might plug these guys into something something silly. Although now I need a proper GB/GBC-style tileset to match them, and making a whole tileset could be a bit of a time sink… :V
